There
is a positive, significant association between personal health habits of health practitioners and their propensity to counsel patients about those health
behaviors. Though it is commonly accepted that certain unhealthy lifestyle
choices are detrimental to patient health, health practitioners who do not practice
healthy lifestyle behaviors tend to underestimate the damage of those
lifestyles and their ability to council patients to change behavior.(References: PubMed IDs 23420327, 10776365, 1983933, 14762049)
Training
health care practitioners to utilize healthy lifestyle behaviors can lead to healthier
practitioners with an increased ability to train patients to do
the same. Implementing programs that educate health practitioners about positive
health behaviors and encourages patient counseling can make a significant
impact in preventative care practices. (References: PubMed IDs 23420327, 14762049)
