Community Nutrition

In Your Home. Practitioners who cook in their homes are more likely to council patients to eat healthy foods. We have cooking classes and encourage learning to grow and prepare your own foods. Learn to cook for the health of it!
*Vallejo Farmers' Market: See what is in season and get recipes for farmers' market goodies
*Container Gardening: Grow food in a container - especially useful for apartment or Mare Island dwellers
*Recipes: There are lots of places to go online for recipes, here are a few. Try Epicurious, Post Punk Kitchen, ...
*Fun in the Kitchen: Play. Check out sites like My Drunk Kitchen and Thug Kitchen

Off Campus. Check out our calendar! We are busy in Vallejo with growth, harvest, and nutrition education. Learn to grow and maintain a garden, large or small, learn how to tell when produce is ready for harvest, get a workout, make a friend. We have touch point and work study options. Vallejo is a food desert and providing access to fresh produce impacts the health of people in our community. Learn more about the impacts of food scarcity:
*Supermarkets provide a larger selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and less expensive food items than smaller grocery or convenience stores (References PMIDs: 20158956)
*Food deserts often contain several convenience stores but multiple convenience stores do not make up for a lack of a supermarket. Convenience stores are well-stocked with food that is energy dense and nutrient-poor; also, they are more likely than supermarkets to carry expired and low-quality food (References PMIDs: 20403377)
*Increasing distance from a supermarket in an urban area is associated with increasing obesity and decreased fruit and vegetable consumption and a generally lower quality diet (References PMIDs: 15475018, 20932312, 17712130, 23592671)

On Campus. Among other nutrition projects on campus, we are working to make nutrition information for vending machine foods available. We also revived the on campus farm-to-cafeteria garden! Food grown by students goes to our school cafeterias.
